Known by the common names California buckwheat and flat-topped buckwheat, plants have small white and pink flower clusters that give off a cottony effect and form large patches or small shrubs. After blooming the flowers turn a rusty color. This common shrub is native to the Southwestern United States, and northwestern Mexico.

This plant provides an important food resource for a diversity of insect and mammal species. This species is the most important native source of honey in California, as it is very attractive to numerous species of native bees and other pollinators, and is a good source of nectar over much of the growing season. The flowers are also nectar food plants and larval host for many butterflies.

Eriogonum fasciculatum is cultivated as an ornamental plant for native plantings, wildlife gardens, natural landscapes and restoration projects. They are drought tolerant.
