Description

One of the easiest primula to grow! Primula vulgaris is a hardy perennial plant grown both as an ornamental, and it also grows in d woodlands. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

The primrose was Benjamin Disraeli's favourite flower; Primrose Day and the Primrose League were given their names in honour of this. It was voted the county flower of Devon in 2002 following a poll by the wild flora conservation charity Plantlife.

Primroses also appear as a charge in heraldry, for example the coat of arms of the Earl of Rosebery.
Plants will gently form colonies if they are allowed to self seed. An excellent plant for difficult shady areas.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 3-8

Height: 15cm, 6"

Location: Shade or part shade

Seeds per pack: 10

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4 weeks. If they have not germinated after 4 weeks then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination is in 14-60 days after the warming period. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
