Gillenia trifoliata, common name Bowman's root or Indian physic, is native to eastern North America from Ontario to Georgia. It is an erect perennial with three lobed palmate leaves and pale pink flowers with narrow petals and reddish calyces above red coloured stems in spring and summer. Its habitat includes dry to moist upland woods and rocky banks.
This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is very hardy to −20 °C (−4 °F) or lower, but requires a sheltered position in partial shade, with acid or neutral soil.

Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15-18°C, 59-68°F) for them to germinate. Germination can be erratic, generally 4-12 weeks after the warming period, though some can take longer.
