Description
Wild Canadian Ginger grows as a woodland perennial in much of North America! It also grows extremely well in a rural garden setting, and makes an excellent ground cover plant! In early spring, lush-green leaves pop up from the ground, quickly followed by small reddish-brown flowers hidden within the foliage. Leaves are wide and heart-shaped, and spread to form a lush carpet of green. This is ideal ground-cover plant below trees or shrubs. Plants are easy to grow, yet never become invasive, as they slowly spread into their tidy clumps. Grow in or shade or part shade and regular soil.

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 6 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 8 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F) for them to germinate. Germination is in 14-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
