Description

Fragrant Snowbell is a small, slender, upright tree which grows to a height of 20-30 feet, making it an ideal choice for yards with limited space. In the spring, extremely fragrant white flowers adorn the tree. Large attractive green leaves provide a lush backdrop. Fragrant snowbell prefers moist, acidic soil and part shade, especially in hot regions. The smooth gray bark exfoliates on older trees, revealing an attractive orange inner layer, providing winter interest. Attracts pollinators.

Very limited supply.

Type: Hardy tree

Hardiness zones: 5-8

Location: Shade or part sun

Seeds per pack: 10

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 90 days. They will not grow yet. Be sure to keep them lightly moist. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 120 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F) for them to germinate. Germination is in 14-60 days after the warming period. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
