Aconitum is commonly known as aconite, monkshood, wolf's bane, leopard's bane, mousebane, women's bane, devil's helmet, or queen of poisons. These herbaceous perennial plants are chiefly native to the mountainous parts of the Northern Hemisphere, growing in the moisture-retentive but well-draining soils of mountain meadows. Though grown in many gardens, these plants are extremely poisonous even to the touch, and must be dealt with carefully.
Aconitum are cultivated in gardens. They typically thrive in well-drained evenly moist garden soils like the related Hellebores and Delphiniums, and can grow in the shade of trees. Aconitum plants are typically much longer-lived than the closely related Delphinium plants.

Germination is generally within 60 days after the warming period, though they could take a few months. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.od.
