Aquilegia formosa, the crimson columbine, western columbine, or red columbine, is a common wildflower native to western North America, from Alaska to Baja California, and eastward to Montana and Wyoming.
Aquilegia formosa is a perennial that grows to 20–80 cm in height, averaging around 60 cm. Flowers, which can be seen from April to August (with some variation between regions), are about 5 cm long and red and yellow in color. The sepals and petal spurs are typically a reddish-orange color. Petal blades are yellow. The primary pollinators are hummingbirds, although bees, butterflies, and flies will also visit flowers, and also pollinated by hawk moths.
These seeds are rare and are in limited supply.

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These seeds benefit from a period of cold. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
