Musa sikkimensis is very cold hardy, similar hardiness to Musa basjoo. Also called Darjeeling banana, is a species of the genus Musa. It is one of the highest altitude banana species. The plant is robust and about 4 m tall. Flowering and fruiting takes place from October to April.
An invaluable ornamental plant. Though this plant is tropical, we use it liberally in planters around our home in the summer, as the foliage is unbeatable, and provides a lush, tropical look to the gardens. Plant bold red annuals below the Banana, for a colorful display. Plants can be started from seed each season, though we prefer to bring the plants in and place them in a sunny window for the winter. Leaves can be cut back to reduce the size of the plant in winter, as the plants quickly regrow next season.
Type: Tropical, patio or houseplant
Height: Up to 4 meters in tropical locations, or use as an ornamental patio or houseplant
Hardiness zones: 5-9. Though listed as hardy in zone 5, we recommend mulch in winter, for added protection.
Seeds per packet: 8 large seeds
Before planting soak the seeds for 24 hours. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Keep lightly moist. Fluctuating temperatures are helpful, using a heat set on a timer to run warm during the day for 16 hours 26°C (79°F), and then off at night for 8 hours (room temperature). Seeds germinate at irregular times, some may germinate about 30 days, while others can take several months.
