Eremurus is a genus of deciduous perennial flowers, also known as the foxtail lilies or desert candles. They are native to eastern Europe in (Russia and Ukraine) and temperate Asia from Turkey to China.
The inflorescence (flowers) look similar to a long spike or a bottlebrush. It consists of many flowers in copper, bright yellow, snow white, pastel pink, orange or any combination of those colors. The leaves grow in tufts of thin, green, straplike strips.
Type: Hardy perennial
Height: 160 cm, 39"
Hardiness zones: 5-9
Location: Sun
Seeds per packet: 10
Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 5-6 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a completely dark and cold period is required. Cover them to block light, and place in a fridge for 90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15°C, 59°F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
