This is one of the most used shrubs in our gardens due to it's stunning large, round red foliage! Foliage is purple/red in the summer with new growth being vibrant scarlet red. In autumn, the leaves all turn fiery red! The 'flowers' appear as smoke plumes, and are red to pink. Though commonly called a 'tree', these plants are actually shrubs. They can easily be pruned to any height, and can grow to 10' tall. Some people cut these shrub to ground level each year to encourage plenty of fresh (colorful) growth each season.
Type: Hardy shrub/tree
Hardiness zones: 4-9
Location: Sun
Height: 300cm, 10'
Seeds per packet: 5
Pour boiling water over seed and then let stand in water for 6-12 hours. Then plant the seeds just under the surface of the soil. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 60-90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22C (68-72F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer, and will germinate irregularly over a long period of time. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait!
Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.
