Guzmania musaica is native to Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia. It is a stemless, evergreen, epiphytic perennial plant. The leaves are about two feet long, spineless, bright green with reddish and dark green transverse striations. In the central rosette of leaves grows a long stem topped by a beautiful inflorescence of pink-red bracts with many waxy tubular yellow flowers arranged in spikes. The plant blooms from June to August.
Hardiness zones: 9-12 outdoors, or grow as a houseplant
Height: 20-40cm, 7.9-15.7 in
Location: Shade or part sun outdoors, or grow indoors
Seeds per packet: 6
Pre-moisten (soak) some long-fibre sphagnum moss using rain water or distilled water (available at grocery stores). Place the seeds on the surface of the pre-dampened mix, and gently water with a spray bottle. Cover with clear plastic, and place your container in a warm area 24°C/75°F, and in a bright location, but out of direct sunlight. A heat mat can be helpful. Germination is 14-30 days. Seedlings can remain in the propagation container until they are 1-2" tall, and then transplant into small pots.
