Description

Anemone cylindrica is also known as thimbleweed. It is native to north central North America where it can be found growing in prairies, in dry open woods, along roadsides and in pastures. It is an upright growing, clump forming flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Plants grow 30–100 centimetres (12–39 in) tall, flowering early summer but often found flowering till late summer, the flowers are greenish-white. The central cone forms a unique green thimble-like shape, which then fluffs out like a little white wooly coat when mature.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 3-8

Height: 30", 76cm

Location: Sun or part shade

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Seeds per pack: 20

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Your planting container should have holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F) for 4 weeks. If they have not germinated after 4 weeks then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15C, 59F) for them to germinate. Germination can be 30-90 days after the warming period, though some will take longer.
