A. chilensis is a perennial climbing vine whose stalks can grow to about 1 meter (3.3 ft) in length. The flowers may be yellowish or brownish-purple in color. Downward-pointing hairs on the flower, similar to those of pitcher plants, trap flies. Once trapped, pollen from the stamens is deposited on the flies, and pollen they brought with them is deposited on the stigmata as they enter.

Soak the seeds for 12 hours before sowing. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Leave them at room temperature 20-22C (68-72F)). Germinates in 4-10 weeks.
