Extremely hardy and tough perennials, these globe allium always amaze us how they return, more and more beautiful, each year without any pampering or care above what mother nature provides! Plants grow to 4 feet (48"/120cm) tall, and produce large purple globes, each globe comprising hundreds of small flowers. The flowers are loved by pollinators, and provide early-season nectar. Each plant produces a bulb that remains in the ground to produce future plants. The globes can also be dried to provide interesting dried arrangements (see images)! These are ornamental onion only.
Height: 48", 120cm
Location: Sun or part sun
Hardiness zones: 4-9
Seeds per packet: 10
Surface sow as light aids germination. Water the seeds in. Leave them at room temperature for 5 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 80 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15C, 59F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants may be poisonous.
