Baptisia alba, commonly called white wild indigo or white false indigo, is a perennial plant native in central and eastern North America, and is typically found in open woodland areas and prairies with tall grasslands.
The plant is tall, with white, pealike flowers. Blooming occurs from April to July, earlier in the southern part of the range. The species is native to grasslands, and is grown in some gardens.
These plants produce tidy clumps of flowers for the perennial garden. Once established plants are easy to grow, reliable and low-maintenance, and are drought tolerant.
Type: Hardy perennial
Hardiness zones: 4-9
Height: 36-48", 90-120cm
Location: Sun to part sun
Seeds per packet: 10
Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 6 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 80 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15-18C, 59-68F) for them to germinate. Germination can be erratic, generally 30-90 days after the warming period for most seeds, though some can take longer.
Ornamental use only. This plant and/or seeds may be poisonous.
