Malcolmia maritima, also known by its common name Virginia stock, is a beautiful and extremely profusely flowering annual! It is probably one of the easiest of all plants to grow. Growing to about 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) tall, it makes a mass of pink, purple and white fragrant four petalled (cruciform) flowers. It is native in Greece and Albania and may be naturalized elsewhere in Mediterranean Europe where it occurs in maritime sandy habitats and in waste places as it tolerates poor soils. For best results in growing Virginia stock, sow on the surface in patches or rows and thin the young plants to 6 inches apart. It prefers full to partial sun and well drained soils. The flowers are generally pink, though can be violet, purple and lavender. Extremely fragrant!
Type: Hardy perennial
Hardiness zones: 3-9
Location: Sun or part shade
Height: 6-10"
Seeds per packet: 20

Direct sow these seeds outdoors in fall for natural cold stratification outdoors, and spring germination. If the seeds are received in winter or in early spring then they can be planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked and temperatures are still cool out. Germination occurs over several weeks as the temperatures rise.
