Very similar to the Shield Sundew (Drosera peltata), Drosera auriculata is a tall sundew, climbing or scrambling perennial tuberous species.
Tuberous sundews are species of the genus Drosera that have evolved to live in summer drought conditions and aestivate as a dormant underground tuber. It is an upright species with a simple or branching inflorescence.
Its underground tuber is generally found 4 - 6 cm under the soil surface and its aerial parts range from 5 - 50 cm in height, with wide differentiation into several forms. Flowers are variable in color, but generally white or light pink. The colour of the plants is also highly variable, ranging from bright grass green even when growing in direct sunlight, to those tinged with variable amounts of red (or even solid red).
Drosera auriculata is commonly found growing on frost free open flats with light scrub, in areas of regenerating forest, on grassy verges and roadside cuttings. The soil type these plants are found in is mainly soft fine clay or peaty, sand soils, which, while wet in winter, dry out over summer.
Note: These seeds are extremely tiny! It's just how they naturally are. Reading glasses are recommended to aid with seeing them, even for those who don't normally require glasses to read. The seeds are shipped in either a wax envelope, or folder within a small paper. Open carefully, and sprinkle onto the growing medium. Do not bury the seeds. Germination information is below.
Seeds per packet: 5
Surface sow on mix of peat/perlite. Place in a very hot location, about 35-40C (95-104F) for 8 weeks. A humidity dome and full sun works well to achieve these temperatures. Keep wet and humid. Distilled, rain, reverse osmosis water only. After the 8 weeks of hot temperatures, then place at 20C (68F) for germination which occurs in 4-6 months, sometimes longer.
