Penstemon digitalis is known by the common names foxglove beard-tongue, foxglove beardtongue, talus slope penstemon, and white beardtongue. It is native to eastern Canada and the eastern and southeastern United States. Penstemon digitalis is the most widespread species of Penstemon east of the Mississippi River.
The plant grows in moist, sandy soil in full sun in meadows, prairies, fields, wood margins, open woods and along railroad tracks. Its bloom period is from late spring to early summer. The plant is known to attract butterflies, bees, and birds such as hummingbirds. It tolerates deer browsing.
Type: Hardy perennial
Height: 24-36", 60-90 cm
Location: Sun
Hardiness zones: 3-9
Seeds per packet: 20
Sustainably wild harvested on organic land in Northumberland County, Ontario.
Surface sow as light aids germination. Water the seeds in. Cover them with clear plastic and place in a fridge for 60 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought to 20-22°C (68-72°F) to germinate. Keep in a bright location, out of direct sun, until germination begins. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer, and will germinate irregularly over a long period of time. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
