The Cupressus cashmeriana, also known as Bhutan Cypress or Kashmir Cypress, is a medium to large coniferous tree that can grow up to 45 meters tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 3 meters. The foliage is very ornamental, pendulous (weeping) and blue-green. Young trees have soft needle-like leaves. The tree produces ovoid seed cones that are dark green and mature to a dark brown color. The natural populations of this species are fragmented and face conservation challenges. The Cupressus cashmeriana has been granted the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Hardiness zones: 8-11, some sources say it is hardy to zone 7.
Location: Sun
Seeds per packet: 10
Soak the seeds for 12-24 hours before planting. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 30 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22°C (68-72°F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
