Description

A hard-to-find shrub with soft think leather-like foliage that is evergreen! Creamy white flowers in 4" flat-topped clusters that bloom in spring, followed by red fruit that turns black when ripe.

In terms of culture, this viburnum thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility. However, it is also adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, and soils of various pH levels. It can withstand dry soils, drought, pollution, and heat.

The flowers of this viburnum are green-cream, creamy-white, or cream-brown in flat-topped inflorescences that can reach up to 4" in diameter. They bloom in late April and early May and are present for about two weeks. Although these flowers are large, they are not overly showy. The floral buds are set by mid-summer and may sporadically open in late summer and early autumn.

The shrub is large, semi-evergreen, broadleaved and ornamental. It matures at about 12' tall by 12' wide. The growth rate is medium to rapid.

Leather Leaf Viburnum can be used as a formal or informal hedge, border, entranceway, spacious foundation, or utilitarian shrub. Its bold texture in foliage makes it a standout choice. It is best displayed when in summer foliage, which is leathery, dense, and dark green. This shrub is also urban tolerant and has vigorous growth.

Type: Hardy shrub

Location: Sun or part shade. We've grown these shrub in full shade and they perform well.

Hardiness zones: 4-8

Seeds per pack: 10

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These seeds require a lengthy stratification, with both a warm and cold stratification. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4-5 months. Keep them lightly moist during this period. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination is usually 14-60 days after the warming period, sometimes longer, up to 4-6 months.
