Persicaria virginiana, also called jumpseed, Virginia knotweed or woodland knotweed is a North American species. The wild form of Persicaria virginiana has a wide native range throughout most of eastern North America, as well as Japan and the Himalayas.
This 'Painter's Palette' cultivar shows much greater variation than wild-type plants, having variegation, more involved red patterning, and sometimes having red or pink flowers. The plant prefers medium to moist soil and full sun to part shade.
Persicaria virginiana blooms in midsummer to late summer/early fall. It has a stalk of small white flowers.
Image is of Persicaria virginiana without variegation. These seeds are for the variegated 'Painters Palette'.
Type: Hardy perennial
Hardiness zones: 4-9
Height/Spread: 50cm, 35"
Seeds per packet: 5
Surface sow as light aids germination. Water the seeds in and leave them at room temperature (20°C/71°F) for 4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15°C, 59F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.
