Bonsai is a Japanese word, and translated it means -planted in a container. This art form is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, and was redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism.
The goal of growing a Bonsai is to create a miniaturized representation of nature in the form of a tree.
Growing Bonsai from seeds gives you complete growth control from the earliest stage possible. It can be very rewarding to see your miniature tree develop into maturity!
We select our Bonsai seeds according to plants that perform well in this art form.
Chinese firethorn or Yunnan firethorn, is a species of Firethorn. It is a short shrub. It is cultivated for its decorative bright red pome fruit (inaccurately called berries). The flowers are white. It survives in warm climates. It cannot tolerate frost, but it can withstand drought. This species originates from central China, and has become naturalized across parts of Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
Hardiness zones: 6-12 outdoors, or grow indoors as Bonsai houseplant
Location: Sun or part shade
Uses: Bonsai, or standard garden (non-Bonsai) use
Seeds per packet: 20
Soak the seeds for 12-24 hours before planting. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. First keep them at room temperature for 30 days. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. Then cover them with plastic to retain moisture, and then place in a fridge for 90-120 days. Be sure they stay lightly moist. Then bring them to approximately 21°C, 70°F for germination.
