
PASSION FLOWER SWEET CALABASH, Fragrant! Passiflora maliformis
Sweet Calabash is a vigorous, tendril vine with very fragrant and large, red, blue and white flowers with a prominent fringe of red coronal filaments. Passiflora maliformis is a woody vine that will gently twine around supporting structures. In tropical climates, it will flower all year round. It is an exotic tropical that is sure to draw attention, and is ideal planted around a patio where onlookers can see it's magnificent flowers!
In Canada, many Passion Flowers are not hardy over winter (especially the ones with the red coloration), so we grow those varieties in pots and take them indoors for the winter months, and grow them in a sunny window! Germination: Soak seeds in orange juice for 24 hours before planting. The acidity of the juice will help soften the outer layer of the seeds and aid germination. Place seeds just below the soil surface, and water in. Place the container is a warm location 21-24C (75F). Cover the pot with clear plastic to help retain moisture. Germination can occur within 2 weeks to several months (ours took about 3 months). Patience may be needed, though they are well worth the effort! Once seedlings sprout, remove the plastic, and place the pot in a sunny location.
